The Real Difference Between a Guidance Counsellor and a Next Steps Coach

2–3 minutes

I’ve sat across the desk from guidance counsellors before — in school and even outside of it — hoping for clarity, direction, or at least something that would help me figure out what to do next.

But if I’m being honest, I left those sessions feeling… more confused than when I walked in.

And if you’ve felt that too, you’re not alone.

What a Guidance Counsellor Actually Does

Let’s be clear: guidance counsellors have an important role. They often work within school systems, managing large caseloads, trying to give students some support around subject choices, future pathways, mental health referrals, and sometimes crisis situations.

But because of the system they work in, their time is limited. They might only see a student once or twice. And the tools they use — like career quizzes or course lists — are often broad, general, and focused on what’s available, not necessarily on what fits you as a person.

It’s not that they don’t care.
It’s that they’re stretched thin. And the system itself often limits how deep they can go.

What I Do Differently as a Next Steps Coach

As a Next Steps Coach, I fill the gap between “figuring it out alone” and “getting the support you actually need.”

I’m not part of a school system.
You don’t have to fit into a pre-existing box.
And I don’t just give you a list of courses or careers to Google.

Instead, I help you:

  • Understand who you are — beyond the ATAR, job titles, or expectations
  • Get clear on what you want (even if you’re not sure yet)
  • Build a plan to move forward — one practical, realistic step at a time
  • Stay motivated, supported, and on track — with someone in your corner

I’ve Been Where You Are — And That Matters

I’ve gone through the same transitions many of my clients are facing now:

  • Leaving school without a clear direction
  • Starting uni or TAFE and wondering if it’s even right
  • Feeling stuck in casual jobs or overwhelmed by the next steps
  • Struggling with motivation, anxiety, or burnout
  • Dealing with family pressure and not wanting to disappoint anyone

I don’t come in as the “expert with all the answers.”
I come in as someone who gets it — because I’ve been there. And I’ve helped others get through it too.

Personalised Support That Meets You Where You’re At

Coaching with me is real-life support. It’s practical, down-to-earth, and actually helpful.

No cookie-cutter advice.
No one-size-fits-all plans.
No pretending that life always fits into neat little boxes.

You set the goals.
We work together to build the habits, skills, and mindset to get there — at your pace, in your way.

Whether you’re trying to figure out what to study, how to get a job, or how to feel more confident in life, I’m here to help you take your next step — not just talk about it.

Maybe What You Needed Was Never Generic Advice

If you’ve ever left a guidance appointment feeling like something was missing, you’re not broken or lazy or behind.

You just might have needed something more personal.
Something more real.
Something that actually fits your life.

And that’s exactly what I offer.

Ready to take the next step?

Let’s connect and move forward together—at your pace, on your terms.
