Career coaches come from a range of professional backgrounds—human resources, education, counselling, and more. But not all of us take the traditional route. My journey into career coaching started from the other side: as a jobseeker facing barrier after barrier.
Today, I help others—especially young adults and individuals with disabilities—navigate the world of employment with confidence, clarity, and purpose. Here’s how I got here.
What’s the Difference Between a Career Coach and a Career Counsellor?
If you’ve ever wondered what sets a career coach apart from a career counsellor, you’re not alone.
- A career coach focuses on practical, goal-driven strategies. We help clients with job applications, resume writing, interview preparation, and career planning tailored to individual goals.
- A career counsellor typically uses psychological assessments and therapeutic techniques to support self-awareness and long-term direction.
Think of coaching as action-based and results-oriented—perfect for when you’re ready to move forward in your career journey.
My Story: From Jobseeker to Career Coach
Unlike many in the field, I didn’t start my career in HR or recruitment. I began as someone who deeply understood what it’s like to face rejection, uncertainty, and roadblocks on the job hunt.
Setbacks That Sparked Something Bigger
I lost count of how many times I heard, “Sorry, you just don’t have enough experience.” Add to that some personal health challenges that made it hard to hold down work long-term, and I quickly became familiar with the frustration so many jobseekers face.
But here’s the thing—I didn’t give up. Instead, I got really, really good at writing applications, tailoring resumes, and developing job search strategies that actually worked. Eventually, a recruitment company even contacted me because they were so impressed by my resume they wanted to use it as a template for other jobseekers!
Turning My Passion into a Profession
As time went on, I found myself helping friends, classmates, and community members craft standout job applications and land roles they were proud of. That passion led me to work as a support worker and employment pathways practitioner, specialising in helping young people with disabilities transition into meaningful work.
It was my dream job—supporting others in finding their path and cheering them on at every step.
A New Chapter: From Employment Practitioner to Business Owner
Then came another life-changing role: motherhood. As much as I loved my job, I didn’t want to miss those precious early days at home with my baby.
But I also wasn’t ready to give up on my purpose. So, I found a way to do both—I launched my own career coaching business, with bubba by my side.
Now, I have the joy of helping others find work they love, while staying home with the little one I love most.
